Morton’s Neuroma and Location of Pain

The foot condition that is known as Morton’s neuroma may also be referred to as Morton's syndrome. It is defined as a compressed nerve, and the pain that is felt is generally located between the third and fourth toes. Pain may also consist of a tingling sensation, similar to pins and needles, or numbness on the inside of the two toes. This condition can be caused from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or from participating in running and jumping activities. The healing process can bring mild relief, and this includes resting the affected foot as often as possible. It may be beneficial to wear protective pads inside the shoes as they can provide adequate support. If you have developed pain in this area of your foot it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat Morton’s neuroma.

Morton’s neuroma is a very uncomfortable condition to live with. If you think you have Morton’s neuroma, contact Dr. Castillo of Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot care needs and answer any of your related questions.

Toe Curls to Strengthen the Feet

Doing toe curls is a great exercise to strengthen the feet. This exercise can stretch and flex the foot to improve your balance, support your arches, and increase your overall foot strength. Toe curls can also help reduce or prevent the pain from foot injuries, such as plantar fasciitis. To do this exercise, sit in a chair, lay a towel on the floor in front of you, and place your foot flat on top of the towel. Keeping your heel still and planted on the towel, lift up your toes and use them to scrunch the towel towards you. Repeat this movement five times on each foot. For more information about this and other exercises for your feet, consult with a podiatrist today.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Surgical Treatment of Hammertoes

Hammertoes are a foot condition characterized by an abnormal bending of the second, third, fourth, or pinky toes. This deformity of the toes can cause pain and irritation in the toes, as well as corns and calluses. There are many nonsurgical treatment options for hammertoes, including shoe modifications, splinting the toe, padding or trimming corns and calluses, and certain exercises, therapies, and medications. However, sometimes these more conservative treatments fail and surgery may become an option. There are several surgical treatment options. In a joint fusion, the cartilage surfaces of the affected joint are removed and a screw is placed into the area to prevent motion. In a phalangeal head resection, a portion of the phalanx bone is removed and tension in the affected tendon is released. There are also tendon transfers, in which the tendons that are too tight may be cut or transferred to relieve tension and straighten the toes. To find the best treatment for your hammertoes, please consult with a podiatrist.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Castillo of Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.
