Why Do Stress Fractures Occur?

A very small crack on a bone can be referred to as a hairline or stress fracture. Stress fractures often occur in the feet and can affect one or more of the twenty-six bones in each foot. These tiny cracks typically result from repetitive movement and can be common among runners or people who participate in sports like basketball, tennis, and ballet. The symptoms can develop gradually and consist of pain that may subside after resting the affected foot, and the area may be swollen or tender. Relief and treatment often begin with stopping the activity that caused the fracture, followed by having an X-ray performed which can determine the extent of the fracture. As the swelling decreases and the pain subsides, it is helpful to reintroduce weight-bearing activities gradually. Staying active helps to stimulate the recovery process but it is important to refrain from high-impact activities. Please contact a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can properly diagnose and treat stress fractures.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Certain Hereditary Conditions May Cause Flat Feet

The pain and discomfort from having flat feet may vary from person to person. There are some patients who do not have pain at all with this condition, whereas there are patients who have difficulty in completing daily activities with flat feet. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and the arch generally forms during the teenage years. For those people who approach adulthood with flat feet, there may be existing medical conditions that can cause it. These are generally hereditary, and can include Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Marfan Syndrome. A proper diagnosis consists of having CT and MRI tests performed, and it is beneficial to have an X-ray taken that can determine if there is arthritis in the feet. Relief may be found when custom-made orthotics are worn, which can make it easier to complete daily activities. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can properly fit you for orthotics, in addition to providing you with other helpful relief options.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Hammertoe Is a Deformity

The toes provide harmony to the body, and the foot condition that is referred to as hammertoe may cause difficulty in walking and can affect balance. Hammertoe is caused by an imbalance in the foot and can occur from wearing shoes that do have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. It affects the second and third toes, causing them to bend down at the joint, resembling a hammer. It is suggested that medical attention is sought when the first symptoms of hammertoe appear, and the toes may be straightened easily. In severe cases, larger shoes may have to be purchased, in addition to possibly having surgery performed for permanent straightening. Recovery time from this type of surgery may take several weeks, and it is advised that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist in the early stages who can offer correct treatment methods.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Space in a Good Pair of Shoes

Although many shoe shoppers are primarily concerned with finding a fashionable pair of shoes that suits their specific style preferences, this might not be the best way to go about shoe shopping. First and foremost, shoes must fit the foot properly and comfortably. One critical aspect of what makes a shoe fit properly is the amount of space in the toe box. As a general rule, it is not a good idea for your toes to be pressed up against the front of the shoe. It is important to remember that your feet move around while you are in motion (walking, running, etc.), and so you need sufficient room in the toe box to account for this foot movement. So the next time that you are out shoe shopping and are trying a new pair of shoes on, you might consider moving around in them and noticing if you can feel the tips of your toes touching the front of the shoe. If you do, select a shoe with a larger toe box. Contact a podiatrist for more tips on proper shoe fitting.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Burn Blisters

Many people will develop a blister at one point in their lives due to repeated friction. For example, when wearing an ill-fitting pair of shoes, the material of the shoes might rub against the skin in an uncomfortable way, sometimes creating a blister. Burn blisters, however, develop not in response to friction but in order to protect an area of the skin that has been burned. For instance, a burn blister may develop on the foot after it has suffered a sunburn or second-degree burn of some kind. If you have a burn blister on your foot due to a second degree burn, seek out medical assistance immediately. This is especially true if you notice that there is swelling, redness, or pus around the blister. Of course, it is always important to resist the urge to pop a burn blister, because this increases the likelihood of developing an infection. Contact a podiatrist today for more information about burn blisters.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact Dr. Castillo of Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

What Can Cause Bunions?

A bunion is a common foot condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and it is considered to be a deformity. Many people can develop a bunion from genetic reasons, or from wearing shoes that do not have enough room for the toes to move freely in. It is noticeable as a bony lump that gradually forms on the side of the big toe, and larger shoes may need to be purchased. If the bunion is large, it may cause the other toes to shift toward each other, which may result in pain and discomfort. Additional symptoms that can accompany a bunion can include calluses forming on the second toe, inflamed skin on the big toe, and the toes may be hard to move. There may be a decreased range of motion in the big toe, and patients may experience chronic pain. Mild relief may be found when the correct size and style shoes are worn, and a protective covering may be put over the bunion which may help to reduce friction. A podiatrist is qualified to diagnose and treat bunions, and it is strongly suggested that you confer with this type of doctor if you have this foot condition.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Castillo of Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Shockwave Therapy May Help Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is located on the bottom of the foot, and connects the heel to the toes. Inflammation of the plantar fascia can cause a condition that is known as plantar fasciitis which may happen from repeated stress as a result of participating in running and jumping activities. It can affect the heel, and it is often difficult to walk. There is a treatment method that is referred to as shockwave therapy, and it may be useful in healing plantar fasciitis. It is performed by administering shockwaves to the affected area, which is typically painless. Patients are generally required to undergo three to five treatments, and relief may be found soon after it begins. Research has indicated results may be seen more quickly when it is diagnosed in the beginning stages. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine if this is an effective form of treatment for you.

Shockwave therapy is a treatment commonly used to treat various injuries and conditions, particularly plantar fasciitis in the feet. To learn more, consult with Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a new treatment option designed to treat bone conditions such as tennis elbow, shoulder pain, and others. Shockwave therapy uses high intensity sound waves that are directed to the affected tissues of the body with pinpoint accuracy. The effects are very beneficial, leading to a production of collagen fibers, eliminating inflammation.

Who Benefits from Shockwave?

Shockwave is recommended for patients suffering from heel pain and associated problems. Heel pain is a common condition which can be caused by obesity, overexertion, and spending a substantial amount of time on hard floors with your feet exposed and unsupported.

Fast and Easy

The therapy is actually a simple process that can leave patients feeling better the very next day. Shockwave therapy is not as dramatic as it sounds. It enables more blood flow to effected areas, addressing the source of the problem and allowing treatment to last for a long time.

Treatment & Recovery Time

Shockwave treatment will enable your feet to recover quickly. This is especially important since surgery is not required. It is cost effective and does not require the use of anesthesia. This treatment is a better option to surgery, since it is proven safe.

Wounds That Don't Heal Need to Be Checked

Your feet are covered most of the day. If you're diabetic, periodic screening is important for good health. Numbness is often a sign of diabetic foot and can mask a sore or wound.

The Benefits of Custom Orthotics

Orthoses, commonly called orthotics, are inner soles that are placed in the shoes. Some types are prefabricated and available for purchase in retail stores, and others are custom-made by a podiatrist. Research has shown that custom orthotics are generally more helpful in reducing foot pain and correcting other foot issues. If you have tried store-bought orthotics and are not finding relief, it may be time to consult a podiatrist. A foot examination may include testing the range of motion, muscle strength, and bone structure. Your walking pattern, which is known as the gait, will be assessed, along with a discussion of what may be causing the pain you are experiencing. Other factors, such as the type of shoes that are worn, lifestyle choices, activities, and work conditions will be considered. A cast or scan is then taken, and the orthotic is crafted specifically for your foot. This may address toe and foot deformities, arch problems, gait abnormalities, and heel problems. For more information on custom orthoses, please consult a podiatrist.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact Dr. Castillo from Bronx Foot Care. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.
